What is
in a name?
Falutin comes from the word “Highfalutin” which means to be pompous, pretentious. So a HIGHfalutin film club would be one that enjoys pretencious discussion of film. But we leave that atmosphere for the film snobs and the elite film festivals.
At Falutin, we don't take ourselves too seriously. We entertain the philosophical and the theoretical and the somewhat pompous discussion of society and culture and identity, but as a group of engaged film watchers.
We want speakers to nerd out, without feeling like they must have credentialing to share why a film speaks to them. so instead of HIGH falutin, we're just mildly pretencious.
So: not HIGHfalutin. Just Falutin.
Our mission
Watch films together, then actually talk about them. A film watched alone ends when the credits roll; a film watched with a room full of people is only getting started. We put on a screening, hand the floor to a speaker who has something real to say about it, and let the conversation go where it goes. No gatekeeping and no right answer, just people thinking out loud, together.
Our vision
A Nairobi where film is something you do with people, not just something you watch. Where a screening is a reason to gather, a speaker doesn't need a title to be worth hearing, and the room makes space for the voices that don't usually get heard, the first-timer with a strong take as much as the regular who has seen everything.
